by Norma Collett, BYU Athletic Communications
PROVO, Utah (Nov. 3, 2006) -- BYU and Dixie State College clashed in an exhibition game on Friday in Provo with the Cougars coming out on top 77-69.
The Cougars jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the early going behind two three-pointers by Mallary Gillespie and 4 points and 2 rebounds by Dani Kubik Wright.
The Rebels would fight back and go on an 8-2 run to trail BYU 13-11. Guard Lindsey Chettinger hit a big three-pointer to help the Rebels fight back.
BYU would lead 42-35 going into halftime thanks in large part to the play of freshman point guard Haley Hall who scored 10 points in the first half for the Cougars.
The Rebels were able to keep it close with some hot shooting from behind the arc, shooting 45 percent in the first half.
The second half began at a hectic pace for both teams. The Rebels, despite their efforts, could not cut into the Cougars lead despite the solid play of forward Jessica Carver who finished the game with 18 points and nine rebounds.
The solid play of Gillespie and Jennie Keele helped the Cougars pull away down the stretch in the second half. Gillespie would finish with 16 points and five assists and Keele would finish with seven points and five assists.
Even with the exhibition loss Dixie State is looking forward to a great year. Carver along with guard Liz Lewis, who finished with eight points and seven assists, were both bright spots for the Rebels.
The Cougars never trailed and had 12 different players who scored in the game. Hall in her second exhibition game with the Cougars would finish the game with 10 points and two assists.
"We saw a little of what Haley can do for us here. She played well for us in the first half," said Head Coach Jeff Judkins.
Forward Shawnee Slade had a solid game for BYU off the bench scoring seven points and grabbing three rebounds.
Judkins was happy the Cougars won, but was not happy with their performance.
"Tonight I saw that we still have a lot of things to work on both offensively and defensively. We just hope to improve and get better." Judkins said.
Forward Melinda Johnsen who had six points and five boards on the night echoed Judkins statement.
"We aren't happy with our performance. We felt like we didn't play like we need to. Hopefully we will improve, and I think we will because this team has a lot of heart." Johnsen said.
Up next for BYU they will open up the season hosting Idaho State at the Marriott Center on November 10 at 7:30 p.m.
