UTAH WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Utes to gain all-state player

Growing up in Brigham City, Mandy Munns always told herself that if the University of Utah's women's basketball program ever offered her a scholarship, she would "jump on it first thing."
The 6-foot-3 center from Box Elder has been true to herself.
Munns orally committed to Utah, she told the Salt Lake Tribune on Monday, and will sign with coach Elaine Elliott's program in November.
"It's always been my no. 1 school," Munns said.
The all-stater who averaged 16 points and 8 rebounds a game her junior year also received an offer from UNLV. Utah State, Weber State and BYU were also interested, she said, but backed off once her commitment to Utah became known.
Munns improved immensely the past two summers, she said, thanks to her involvement with the club team Salt Lake Metro.
"That's where it all started," she said. "That's where the attention came from really."
Munns is also an all-state volleyball player, but will concentrate on playing basketball at Utah. The four-year starter will play post for the Utes.
She's the third player from Salt Lake Metro's recent summer team to commit to a division I program, joining Timpview's Alexis Kaufusi (BYU) and Canyon View's Cassie Platt (SUU). Two others are expected to announce their decisions public shortly.
