Elko hoops standout commits to New Mexico State
Elko High basketball player Taylor Altenburg has verbally committed to play for New Mexico State University. The senior averaged 17.2 points, 8.7 rebounds and three steals a game last season.
"I really like the coaching staff," said Altenburg, who considered Utah State, Colorado and Indiana State, among other schools. "I felt comfortable around them, and all of the players. I really fit in well."
A 6-foot shooting guard, Altenburg played club basketball for Salt Lake Metro in Salt Lake City, Utah. She made the three-hour commute to and from Salt Lake City regularly for games and practices.
"Usually my parents drive me and I'll do my homework, then on the way home I just sleep," she said.
Altenburg wanted to make a decision before her senior season started, and said she can now focus on making sure the Indians, who reached the first round of the playoffs in 2006-07, have a good year.
Through her three years as a starter at Elko, Altenburg has 1,203 career points, 800 career rebounds and 272 career steals.
