Two Top of Utah high school girls basketball players have given verbal commitments to college programs.

Layton High’s Sheila Adams, a 5-foot-5 point guard, has verbally committed to sign a national letter of intent with Big Sky Conference Tournament champion Idaho State University during the upcoming fall signing period.

She is rated as a top guard prospect in the state by Intermountain Hoops Scouting Service.

The service says “Adams is a tremendous athlete; allstate in multiple sports. She has big-time range on her 3-point shot and shoots very consistently ... has the ability to push the ball up into early offenses or pull up and nail the 3. She is a good penetrator and defender.”

    Adams, a two-year starter and first-team selection on the 2006-07 Standard-Examiner All-Area Team, averaged 16.0 points (season-high 27 versus Fremont and Payson) on 45.1 percent shooting — 37.2 percent on 3-point attempts (54 3s) and 61.7 percent free-throw shooting.

She also averaged 2.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 4.0 steals for the Region 1 runner-up Lancers (9-3, 16-7 overall), who advanced to the state 5-A quarterfinals.

Adams, a right-handed pitcher, was also a first-team pick on the 2007 All-Area Softball Team.

Davis High’s Dani Hosking, a 5-7 shooting guard/ small forward, has orally committed to Southern Utah University.

Hosking, the 2007 Region 1 most valuable player, averaged 15.8 points (seasonhigh 28 versus Northridge) on 47.2 percent shooting — 41.4 percent on 3-point attempts (36 3s) — and 76.8 percent free-throw shooting.

She also averaged 4.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 3.3 steals for the Region 1 champion Darts (11-1, 21-3), who advanced to the 5-A semifinals.

    Hosking was also a first-team selection on the 2006-07 Standard-Examiner All-Area Team.
