ANCHORAGE – Carl Arts led a balanced offensive attack with 20 points and fellow senior McCade Olsen chipped in with 18 points as 16th-ranked Alaska Anchorage opened its regular season with an 80-53 victory over Brevard College at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex on Friday night.
Arts grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds and senior point guard Luke Cooper dished nine assists. The Seawolves never trailed and led by as many as 37.
Brevard (0-2) was paced by 16 points and six rebounds from forward Jonathan Whitson. The Tornados, of Brevard, N.C., are a NCAA Div. II second-year provisional member.
UAA got an early lift from senior guard Chris Bryant, who made his Seawolf debut after transferring from Div. I Drake. The Metlakatla native scored 13 of his 16 points and grabbed six rebounds in the opening 20 minutes to help UAA build a 38-16 halftime advantage.
Junior swingman Cameron Burney was perfect on four three-point tries, equaling his career-high with 12 points. The Seawolves shot 40.7 percent (11-27) as a team from long range.
For Arts, a 6-6 senior All-America candidate from Valdez, Friday’s outing marked his seventh career double-double and pushed him into the No. 20 spot on UAA’s career scoring list with 918 points.
Olsen was an impressive 7 of 12 from the field and 4 of 4 on free throws. The 6-8 forward also snagged nine rebounds.
