WOODS CROSS — Jami Mokofisi looked unstoppable Tuesday night, scoring more than half her team’s points and crashing the boards for 16 rebounds as the Lady Wildcats powered their way to a 51-42 victory over the Lady Falcons of Clearfield. “We feel really good after to-night,” said Woods Cross coach Mitch Smith about the team’s victory. “We struggled slightly in the first half but they stepped up their game and pulled out the victory.” Mokofisi had every facet of her game going that night, adding 27 points and five steals to go with her dominating presence around the basket. “I’m so excited,” said Mokofisi after learning of her statistics. “I don’t think I’ve ever scored that many points. I usually am able to pull down the rebounds, but when the opportunities came for me to score points I guess I did.”
But Mokofisi wasn’t the only one the coach was happy about.
“Brittnee (Smith) had seven assists and only one turnover,” said her coach about his point guard. “It was just the kind of play I was looking for with her tonight. She did exceptionally well.”
But it didn’t look that way for the first half of play. Clearfield played a zone defense, hoping to keep the Wildcats in check. While they allowed Mokofisi to rebound, they swarmed around the ball creating turnovers. After the first half Clearfield was up by two points, and was considered a “moral victory” by Coach Rebecca Packer.
“They had a height advantage over us so I made our team play a zone defense to swarm to the ball quicker and get the rebounds and points,” said Packer of their first half play. “After we switched to a man defense we struggled.”
Clearfield struggled mightily coming out of the half. Woods Cross played a post-up offense and made Mokofisi the center of their attack. It worked well, as she scored 15 of her 27 points in the second half.
And the defense stepped up their game, too. Woods Cross was all over the Lady Falcons after the first half, forcing turnovers and creating tough shots for the Falcons, holding them to only 16 points in the second half.
“They played tough to-night,” said Smith of the team’s efforts. “This was a great game for us going into the Murray game.”
Clearfield coach Rebecca Packer didn’t have the same sentiment.
“We didn’t play the up-tempo offense I wanted to get out of our team,” she said about their typical style of play. “We’re a smaller team compared to them. We allowed way too many second chance points. We just can’t do that with the type of team Woods Cross has.”
Woods Cross (3-0) will host Murray Friday night, as the Lady Falcons, now 0-3, will go home to take on Alta.
