Aggies run past ’Runners
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Beep beep.
This time, the Roadrunners didn’t get away.
Utah State snapped an eight-game road losing streak dating back to last year with an 88-66 win Saturday night over Cal State Bakersfield.
Aggies guard Jaycee Carroll, the WAC’s leading scorer, rebounded from an 11-point outing against Utah to lead Utah State (6-5) with 27 points at Rabobank Arena.
Forward Gary Wilkinson tied his season high with 21 points and the Aggies held CS Bakersfield to 21.4 percent shooting in the second half.
The Roadrunners, playing their first full Division I schedule in the second year of a 4-year transition to D-I, fell to 1-7.
“We were aggressive tonight and that was awfully positive,” Aggies coach Stew Morrill said. “We needed a win, we needed a road win. We’ve had a problem with second-half defense and tonight it was first half, it just flip-flopped. Offensively, we played well.”
Utah State’s only previous win away from the Smith Spectrum this season came on a neutral court against Iowa in the South Padre Island Invitational. The Aggies are now 3-0 alltime against CSUB.
Junior forward Terrence Johns led the ’Runners with 20 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Guard Alex Johnson added 14 points and Zack Grasmick had 11.
Utah State freshmen Tyler Newbold and Tai Wesley made the first starts of their careers. Wesley started in place of senior forward Stephen DuCharme, who had started every game and was the WAC player of the week Nov. 26 but only scored two points in the Utah loss.
“I thought after the Utah game we just needed to shake it up a little bit,” Morrill said. “Both those two freshman did a good job. That lineup we had in to start the game is a really good passing lineup. I thought that worked out well.”
Morrill said he didn’t remember starting two freshmen in 20-plus years of coaching.
Wesley scored 12 points and hauled in six rebounds. Newbold added nine points and six rebounds and neither missed a shot from the floor, going a combined 8-for-8.
“I was excited when the coaches told me,” Newbold said. “I was gung-ho about it and ready to go. I was able to get into the flow of the game and get some shots. It was a nice win for us.”
