Weber High in form with several scoring options

BY RYAN WILKINSON Standard-Examiner correspondent

PLEASANT VIEW — Weber High girls basketball coach Lisa Dalebout claims her team is defensive-minded. She couldn’t prove it Tuesday night — but only because the Warriors’ offense was spectacular.

Kelsey Sparkman, Amie Jensen and Shay Sorensen combined for 44 points for the Warriors, leading Weber to a 55-39 preseason win over Roy in Richard R. Connolly Gym.

The scary thing for the Warriors’ Region 1 opponents this year is so many players have proven their ability to put up big numbers this season, giving the team multiple options on the offensive end.

In the Warriors’ first game, senior Natalee Bailey dropped in 14 points against Mountain Crest, while junior guard Katie Wahlen has already recorded two double-digit scoring performances.

“I always like to be a defensive coach, but I like the fact that we can score some points this year,” Dalebout said.

Sparkman, a 5-foot-10 senior forward, poured in a game-high 20 points, along with six rebounds and a blocked shot. Jensen notched 14 points and five boards while Sorensen scored 10.

Weber got off to a hot start, outscoring the Royals 10-1 in the game’s first four minutes. Roy’s Sharla Stevenson responded with six points late in the first quarter, helping her team string together a 10-point run to take the lead near the end of the period.

After leading 25-18 at the half, the Warriors reverted back to their defensive state of mind in the third quarter, holding Roy to a single field goal and
just seven points in the period.

The Warriors (3-2 overall) connected on 15-of-18 field goals in the second half and scored all but two of their total points from the field.

Regarding Weber’s prowess on both ends of the court,
Jensen, a senior forward, issued a warning to future opponents.

“People better watch out because this is going to be a good year for us,” she said. “We’ve found our weaknesses and what we need to work on and we’re getting better.”

Dalebout agreed, at least as far as the team’s progress is concerned.

“We’ve had some ups and downs so far,” she said. “Overall, I think we’re doing a good job to make some strides in the right direction.”
