Noel Hollingsworth has been a 6-foot-9 wrecking ball for the Judge Memorial Boys' Basketball team this season.
In the team's first five games, the center has scored over 20 points in four of the games including two 30-points performances. He also notched three double-doubles during that span, pulling down over 10 rebounds against East, Hillcrest and Taylorsville.
As he continues to play well, schools need not swoon over him as Hollingsworth already has committed to Brown University, an Ivy League school in Providence, R.I.
Living in Connecticut and Texas before moving to Utah, Hollingsworth was not afraid to search near and far for a school to attend and said Brown was a really good fit for him because "he liked the coaches and liked the atmosphere."
Even with his commitment, the player is not just phoning it in for the Bulldogs this season, helping propel the team to a 4-1 start.
A true big-man, Hollingsworth rarely ventures outside of the post choosing to stick to a soft touch around the hoop.
"He has always been a skilled big guy and his game is in the low post," Judge Memorial coach Jim Yerkovich said. "He has the skills to score and is a problem because he is so wide."
His feel around the basket is crucial, figuring that he almost always is seeing double and triple teams when he receives the ball.
An advantage for Hollingsworth when seeing this coverage is he can usually draw the foul with so many defenders hounding him. And, unfortunately for opposing teams, the big man is an excellent shooter from the free-throw line. In two games against East and Hillcrest, he shot a combined 21 of 25 from the line and in both games he started off the game by sinking his first six attempts.
Hollingsworth said he always has focused on his free-throw shooting and makes a conscious effort to get to the line.
While he has been scoring almost at will, the place where Hollingsworth really prides himself is in his rebounding. He has set the goal to lead the state in rebounding this season.
"I was second last year and the big reason I like rebounding is because you can control everything," Hollingsworth said. "I think if I don't get a lot of rebounds we would struggle so that is something I have to do."
He has put the rebounding duties on his shoulders but Hollingsworth has not had to bear the whole load as juniors Stallon Saldivar and Oliver Hughes contribute to the team's outside scoring.
"We have two great shooters in Oliver and Stallon," Hollingsworth said. "We are a young team but most of the guys on the team were here last year when we won 22 games, so we know what it is like to have that kind of success."
The team continues with a difficult nonregion schedule taking on Bountiful and Brighton. Both teams have strong post play so it should create interesting matchups with Hollingsworth
