Working for her points

Layton's Sheila Adams goes into every game knowing that the opposing team's best defender will guard her. It's not a cocky thing, but when you're the second-leading scorer in the state averaging 23 points a game and one of the best three-point shooters in the state, having a defender on you like a shadow is almost inevitable.

"I do what I need to do, whether it's dish the ball or create for my teammates," Adams said. "It pumps me up to have a good defender on me. It fires me up, it doesn't get me down."

That was the case against Riverton on Tuesday. Riverton's Alle Finch did a good job of keeping her from getting good looks in the first half but instead of getting discouraged, Adams went harder to the basket, no matter how tough it was to get a shot off.

I've never seen anybody work so hard for her points. It wouldn't be a stretch to say she's the best scoring guard in the state. On Tuesday, she contorted and twisted her way to the basket for layups, made cuts and created space to get good looks for long-range shots. She finished the game with 24 points.

"Sheila's always been a step above [other players]," coach Van Price said. "She can do anything we ask her to do."
