OREM —
Lehi was riding a five-game winning streak coming into its region opener against Timpanogos, but it was the Timberwolves who came out on top, with much of the credit going to Skyler Halford.
Halford led all scorers with 27 points to lead the T-wolves (5-6) over the Pioneers 54-48 Friday night. When you do the math, Halford's points amounted to half the Timpanogos total.
"I hope anybody who watched believes he's a next-level player," said Timpanogos coach Clay Anderson. "Because he is."
Trevor Thomas' basket with 4:00 remaining in the game gave the T-wolves their largest lead of the night at 46-32. The Pioneers (6-6) fought back, however, over the final minutes with a 14-4 run that closed the gap to 50-46 with :24 remaining. Josh Swenson scored seven of his 13 points during that stretch.
Halford and Thomas each hit a pair of free throws in the final seconds to seal the win for Timpanogos.
"We're glad we had them here," said Anderson. "They're a good team. For us it was everything because if we want to go to state we have to beat them."
