Grand night for USU's Richards?

If she doesn't get it tonight against Hawaii, it appears that Saturday's game at New Mexico State will mark Utah State women's basketball player Taylor Richards' 1,000 career point. Richards, who has been part of Aggie coach Raegan Pebley's ongoing rebuilding project, is 20 points shy of a grand. She is the No. 5 all-time scorer on USU's career points list.

When the tiny 5-foot-4 senior guard scores the milestone point, she will become the fifth player in Utah State (5-8, 1-0 WAC) women's basketball's 20 year history to reach 1,000 points and the first since the program was reinstated in 2003.

Richards, from West Valley City's Hunter High School, needs 41 points to tie Pam Shirley (1977-79) at No. 4. The most recent USU woman to reach the 1,000 point plateau was Margaret Johns in the 1982-83 season. Johns finished her career with 1,081 points and is currently in third on the USU career points list.

Richards has an outside chance of passing Brenda House (1,192 points) for second all time. Jerrie McGahan (1977-80) tops all Aggie women with 1,353 points.

All-time, Richards ranks first in assists (333), second in three-point field goals made (76), second in three-point field goals attempted (247) and third in steals (142).

METRO NOTES:    Taylor Richards played for Anita Rowland's Utah Avalanche the predecessor to our girls program.
