WOODS CROSS - Box Elder's Brooke Tolman knows just how loud the Woods Cross band can be. Every time Tolman touched the ball in Box Elder's game against the Wildcats, the rowdy band would scream and yell. But, the extra heckling didn't bother her.
"I like it because when you make a shot, it kind of shuts them up," Tolman said.
Tolman quieted the band every time she hit one of her four three-pointers as she helped the Bees stay undefeated in region play with a 48-45 win over Woods Cross.
With post players like Mandy Munns and Tiffany Wilde, it is important for guards like Tolman - who shot 44 percent from behind the three-point line - to hit outside shots.
"[The defense] is going to pack it in," said Munns, who led Box Elder with 15 points. "As soon as they do, it opens it up for our guards. It's good for us to be well-rounded."
That was the case in the first half when the Bees struggled to get the ball inside against Woods Cross' aggressive defense.
But, both teams had trouble getting points on the board. Box Elder was 4-for-15 from the field while Woods Cross was 2-for-14 from the field in the first quarter.
The Bees found their rhythm in the second quarter, scoring 20 points and building a 29-20 lead heading into halftime. In the third quarter, though, the Wildcats were able to cut a 12-point lead to four. Jaimi Mokofisi and Mikelle Leavitt led the way as Woods Cross went on a 10-0 run to end the third.
The momentum continued into the fourth as the Wildcats took a 39-38 lead after a Leavitt three-pointer with 7:42 left.
"We executed and were patient," Woods Cross coach Mitch Smith said.
"But there was about two minutes in the fourth quarter that we didn't and that cost us the game."
Box Elder coach Kris Harding said that for most of the season, the Bees have had to endure a strong surge by the other team, but have learned to hold on for the win.
"Every team is out to get us," Harding said. "We've just had to withstand and withstand and keep composure."
