ANCHORAGE - Carl Arts scored a game-high 21 points and fellow senior Luke Cooper had a season-high 18 points and eight assists as 5th-ranked Alaska Anchorage knocked off 23rd-ranked Northwest Nazarene 77-61 on Saturday in a battle of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference frontrunners.
A Wells Fargo Sports Complex sellout crowd watched the Seawolves (18-3, 9-0) establish a new GNAC standard with their 16th straight victory, while also taking a 3-game lead over NNU (14-4, 6-3) and Seattle Pacific at the midway point of the league schedule.
UAA, which also got 16 points from senior post McCade Olsen, has not lost since dropping three games to Division I teams in the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout, Nov. 22-24. Ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Div. II West Region, UAA is now 18-0 against D-II competition and unbeaten in three games against fellow top-25 squads.
Olsen, who was questionable for action Saturday after suffering a mild sprained ankle on Thursday, showed no ill effects with 7-of-10 shooting and pair of steals. The senior made one of the biggest plays of the night when he stole the ball at midcourt and dribbled in for a slam that barely beat the halftime buzzer. That play put UAA up 39-24 at the break.
