2A girls basketball championship: Twice is nice for South Sevier girls

RICHFIELDSouth Sevier can begin thinking about making it back-to-back-to-back.

With a convincing 59-36 win over Richfield, the Rams won their second consecutive 2A state championship Saturday evening at the Sevier Valley Center.

"I think this one might feel even better than last year," said all-tournament team member Aubrey Lindgren. "We had to go through North Sevier and then Richfield, so we beat the best two teams in the state. To be the best, you have to beat the best, and that is exactly what we did."

With the nucleus of the team only juniors, and assuming they all return healthy, South Sevier has a realistic shot at making it three straight titles.

"Of course we want to make three in a row," said tournament MVP Jadi Parsons. "We have been talking about it as a group ever since we started playing together. This one feels great, just a little bit different than last year's. We can enjoy this one for a little bit, and then we can start working toward next season."

The dynamic duo of Parsons and Lindgren were simply too much for the over-matched Wildcats. Richfield's Jaquel Christensen scored the games first six points — she finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds — but after that it was all South Sevier.

Parsons hit two free throws and nailed a 3-pointer before Lindgren flat out took over the game. Playing in the high post, she was getting the ball at the free-throw line and either driving to the hoop for a score — she scored nine consecutive points — or dishing to cutting teammates under the hoop.

"Aubrey has an amazing ability to see the floor and get the ball to people where they can score," said Parsons of her teammate. "She is a great player and so much fun to play with. She really did it all for us."

Lindgren finished with 26 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Parsons contributed 14 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Besides having the offense start clicking, the Rams also picked up the defensive pressure. After Richfield's first six points, the Wildcats went nearly eight minutes without another point. By the time the onslaught was over, South Sevier had a 31-11 halftime lead and the game was never in question again.

"We used a 1-3-1 zone and started trying to move our feet more and just getting up on them," said Parsons. "We just picked up our intensity and tried to pressure them into mistakes."

The defense caused plenty of miscues as the Rams forced 29 turnovers and held Richfield to 29 percent from the field. South Sevier had 16 steals, which also helped contribute to some easy baskets on the other end.

Although Parsons and Lindgren were the stars, coach Randy Madsen was quick to point out that it was a complete team that got the win.

"Aubrey and Jadi are great, great players," he said, "but without everyone all working together and performing as a team, there is no way we would be where we are."
