NCAA eligibility rules state that once a student has enrolled full time, they have five years to complete their eligibility and their eligibility "clock" begins.  LDS missions turn off the "clock "but only if the athlete stays out at least one full year. Non attendance in college does not turn off the NCAA "clock".

NAIA rules are based on 10 semesters of enrolling for 9 hours or more and don't have to be consecutive years.

Both organizations allow only four years of competition.

Former Metro player Geoff Payne will continue his basketball career at Westminster College.  Payne will transfer to Westminster and play his Sr. season.  Payne was recently denied an appeal with the NCAA to play his fourth year of basketball at the NCAA level.

Payne began his basketball career by walking on at Utah.  Payne returned early from his LDS mission and spent the year assisting with Alta High School.  This became year two of the "clock". He subsequently played the next two seasons for Snow College (years 3 and 4 on the "clock") but years 1 and 2 of actual participation. Payne then played last year at SUU (year 5 on the "clock") but only year 3 of actual participation.

Geoff is eligible at the NAIA (Westminster) level and will finish his final year of participation playing for the Griffins.

Congratulations to Geoff on your scholarship. His commitment brings the total number of 2008 Boys Metro players that have received scholarships to 17.
