ST. GEORGE Dixie State College of Utah head women's basketball coach Angela Kristensen announced Wednesday the addition of more more student-athlete to this year's recruiting class with the signing of Shanae Vaifanua, a 5-8 guard from Hurricane (Utah) High School, to a National Letter of Intent to play for the DSC program in the upcoming 2008-09 season.
The signing of Vaifanua brings DSC's 2008 spring signings list to five players, including BreAnne Haslem, a 6-1 post player from Salt Lake Community College, Jessie Ingraham, a 5-6 point guard from Pima (AZ) CC, Courtney Spawn, a 5-10 prep guard/forward from Virgin Valley High School in Mesquite, Nev., and Tayna Clark, a 5-10 guard/forward from Arizona Western College.
Vaifanua was a two-year letterwinner for the Tigers and a two-time Utah 3A all-state selection. This past season she averaged 16 points, seven rebounds and five steals a game to help lead HHS to the state 3A semifinals. In addition, Vaifanua garnered first team all-state recognition and was named Region 9 MVP and Deseret News 3A defensive player of the year for her efforts.
She was a three-sport athlete at HHS, earning two varsity letters in volleyball and track, along with all-region and all-state accolades in both sports. In signing at DSC, Vaifanua will reunite with a pair of former prep teammates as she joins former HHS running mate Brandi Barrett and current DSC starting point guard Courtney Boyd, who was a teammate of Vaifanua at Keokuk (Iowa) High School in 2004-05.
"We are lucky to have a local kid as talented as Shanae remain in the area and play at Dixie State," said Coach Kristensen. "Defensively, she is exactly what we look for in a player - very active and very physical.
"She will be able to play multiple positions for us because of all her strengths," Coach Kristensen added. "Shanae is a tenacious player who is quick with or without the basketball. She has a tremendous upside and I look forward to watching her grow at Dixie State."
Dixie State finished its second year of NCAA Division II competition with a 16-11 overall record, including a third-place 12-6 showing in the Pacific West Conference. The Rebels finished the year on a roll, winning six of their seven final games, and will return the core of their team that could make a run at the PacWest title in 2008-09.
