Lady Wolverines look to Sharps

WEST WENDOVER - West Wendover girls basketball will look to the Sharp family for leadership on and off the court.

Former assistant coach John Sharp took the reigns of the Wolverines' program this offseason as he replaced Kathy Durham and he will look to a familiar face for big plays on the court - his daughter Danika.

Danika Sharp averaged 26.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 4.7 steals per game as a sophomore and still has two seasons left to improve on those numbers.

“We're looking for the same out of her,” coach Sharp said. “Last year we ran her as the point guard and this year we want to use her at the combo. Hopefully, we'll get the same performances out of her which I'm sure we will.”

In order to move Sharp away from the point guard spot, Nyssa Salazar will need to take on the role full-time.

“She's come a long ways,” with her ballhandling,” coach Sharp said about Salazar. “Her defense is great. She doesn't score a lot but she should take a lot of pressure off Danika.”

One weakness West Wendover will need to work around is an issue of height. The team's average size is 5-foot-6. Senior Estela Botello is the team's tallest player at 5-10 and will need to control the post for her team to be successful.

Liz Macedo, who stands 5-8, could help in the paint as well. She probably will be outsized frequently, but coach Sharp said Macedo is not afraid of contact and is a very physical defender.

Aracelli Flores, who was a key reserve last year, will probably take on a starter's role this season. Coach Sharp said she has worked hard in the offseason on her shooting.

“I think she's played with some boys this summer because she's gotten a lot better,” he said.

The Lady Wolverines expect to improve on their 13-12 record and with eight seniors in the fold, they should be accomplish the goal.

“We should be faster and little more defensively sound,” coach Sharp said.

West Wendover opens its season Tuesday against Christian Heritage.
