The Lady Wolverines have opened the basketball season with a 9-1 record. Their only loss came this past weekend in a 64-58 overtime game against a scrappy Lund team.
“This was a physical game and we need to be able to deal with that,” said Coach John Sharp. “I am proud of all my girls. They have played hard in every game.”
For the weekend tournament they went 4-1, defeating Round Mountain(71-25), Battle Mountain (51-39), White Pine (59-45) and Pahranagat Valley (45-44), outscoring their opponents 284-217. They were led by Junior Danika Sharp, who recorded her first career triple double against Round Mountain, going for 32 points 10 assists and 10 steals.
For the 5 game weekend, Sharp combined for 174 points, 36 steals and 30 rebounds. She was also 54-68 from the free-throw line.
“This past weekend was a good test for us as we saw quality teams,” added Coach Sharp. “It provided a good gauge for us and definitely gave us some things we need to work on.”
As a team, the Wolverines are in the top 10 in the state in most categories. They are 1st in total steals with 172 and 2nd in steals/gm at 17.2. They place 6th in total rebounds with 294, 2nd in offensive rebounds and 10th in rebounds/game. Their 3 point shooting and assists rank 7th, while their 51 points/game rank 9th.
On an individual basis, Sharp’s 31.2 points/game currently have her ranked #7 in the nation, according to Maxpreps.com. She is 50% from the field and 83% from the free-throw line.
“Danika is playing well to lead the team, but she knows it takes everyone around her to also do their job. Estella has improved tremendously and has to be reckoned with,” said Coach Sharp. “When we hit the floor ready and work as hard as we did this weekend, we know we can play.”
The early season games have been a good test as the ladies have seen many different styles of play, from the running to the slow-down, and have been in close games they’ve had to be physical in.
Their early games experience will give them confidence going in to league play, when the new year rolls in. Lincoln County is playing well and with the addition of Mountain View, Agassi Prep and Calvary Chapel, they will have their work cut out for them, but seem primed for the challenge.
