Olsen, Toolson Score 20 in Win Against SUU

Orem, Utah - Two Wolverines scored more than 20 points apiece in a 78-72 win against Southern Utah (3-8) of the Summit League Saturday at the McKay Center as the Utah Valley University men's basketball team improved to 6-4 on the year.

Senior guard Josh Olsen scored a career high 24 points on the night, and fellow senior guard Ryan Toolson dropped 22. Sophomore big man Justin Baker also scored a season high 11 points in the game and was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor in the come-from-behind win.

"I thought Southern Utah played tremendous, particularly in the first half they took us apart," UVU head coach Dick Hunsaker said. "I thought Josh Olsen should get the game ball for tonight's game, but I thought collectively we all played well and contributed in this victory."

Olsen led all scorers after the first period with 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor. The Wolverines were 13-for-24 from the field in the half for a 54.2 field goal percentage, and led the battle of the boards with 14 rebounds to SUU's nine.

There were six lead changes and two ties in the first eight minutes of the game, but Southern Utah took a 42-32 lead into the locker room at the half after shooting 13-for-15 from the free-throw line and sinking 61.9 (13-21) percent of their shots from the floor.

The Wolverines' second half comeback was led by Toolson who scored 18 points in the period and 16 in the final 8:07 of the game. He was 11-for-11 from the charity stripe in the game marking the fourth time this season he has made 10 or more free throws in a game.

Down 49-57 with just over 11 minutes left in the game, UVU scored 12 unanswered points and held SUU scoreless for over five minutes to regain the lead for good. Toolson, Olsen, and Baker scored all but four of the Wolverines points in those final 11 minutes.

UVU is now 3-1 against Southern Utah since Utah Valley began playing a full NCAA Division I schedule, and has won the last three meetings between the two teams.

Utah Valley's next game will be Monday at Montana of the Big Sky Conference for the two teams' second meeting of the season. The Wolverines beat the Grizzlies 82-75 in the McKay Center Nov. 25. Tipoff for Monday's game is set for 7 p.m. and can be heard live on 1400 KSTAR with Steve Watts calling the action.
