The Daily Aggie :: 12/23/08

The Aggie women's basketball team wasn't quite able to dig itself out of a 15 point halftime hole as they lost 74-61 to Long Beach State last night. Madison Spence scored 19 points and Kaitlyn Soto added 13 points for the Aggies. Niki Holt grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Aggies on the board, Kaitlyn Soto added eight rebounds to her stat line. Danisha Corbett went down late in the first half with an injury and did not return in the second half as the Aggies were able to cut the halftime lead from 15 to just six point with 14:37 remaining in the game. Free throws were a major issue for the Aggies as they shot only 11-25 from the stripe including just 9-19 in the second half. The Aggies were 7-11 from behind the three point arc in the second half after shooting just 1-10 in the first half. Unfortunately the Aggies could not contain LBSU's Whitney Fields who scored a career high 30 points on 13-17 shooting in just 28 minutes of play.

Aggie freshman Taylor Altenburg saw her first significant action of the season (she had previously played in two games but in limited minutes) and she scored seven points, hitting a three pointer and hitting 4-6 free throws. Altenburg is a three point specialist and depending on the extent of Corbett's injury, could see increased minutes as the Aggies search for more offense.

Long Beach State recorded it's third win of the season with all three coming against the WAC. The Aggies drop to 4-7 on the season but with three remaining road non-conference games, Coach Spence's goal of reaching seven wins in the non-conference is still attainable. The Aggies are now off until Sunday when they'll face Long Island University in the first round of the Maggie Dixon Surf 'n Slam Classic in San Diego.

We maintain that this team will be a force to be reckoned with in conference play and as a point of reference, last season's regular season and tournament champion Fresno State started the season 2-8 and then won their final three non-conference games to start league play at 5-8 and then finished 14-2 in conference play and 22-10 overall. As Coach Spence has mentioned many times, they don't hand out trophies in December.
