Top 10 players to watch
1. Tyler Haws
Lone Peak, shooting guard
Haws is the most complete offensive player the state has seen in years. A BYU commit, Haws can score from all three levels. He's can shoot the ball with three-point range, he has a great jumper from 15 feet and he can get to the basket off the dribble. He's shown that for years, and it's one of the main reasons that he's one of the top 100 recruits in the country.
2. Kyle Collingsworth
Provo, shooting guard
If Haws is the best player in the state, Collingsworth may be 1-A. He can simply do it all on the court. He a great passer, he's a great rebounder and he's got an exciting slashing style off the dribble that draws oohs and ahs from the crowd. He's also got a killer instinct and he's the best triple-double threat in the state. He's a definite high-major talent and the unquestioned best player in the state when it comes to the 2010 class.
3. C.J. Wilcox,
Pleasant Grove, shooting guard
Wilcox, thus far this season, has proved himself to be a Pac-10 talent, which is why Washington signed him in the first place. He's maybe the best athlete in the state, one that can take the ball off the dribble and dunk over people in the lane. He's got a smooth jumper from three-point range and he's improved his defense.
4. Brandon Davies
Provo, power forward
Davies, a BYU signee, may play center for Craig Drury, but he's a power forward at the next level. Very athletic, great footwork down low and unusual skill for a big guy are his calling cards. He's good enough to lead a break, he has a good jumper to 15 feet. He gets in foul trouble too much, and that's something he needs to improve on. But he's the best big man in the state.
5. Reyes Gallegos
West Jordan, shooting guard
Have you seen the alley-oop dunks, the breakaway finishes at the rim, or the sky-walking blocked shots? Gallegos, a Nebraska signee, does all of that and does it without the imposing stature. He simply has springs for legs. He's also very explosive off the dribble and one half -- Mason Sawyer is the other -- of one of the best backcourts in the state.
6. Mason Sawyer
West Jordan, point guard
One of the best, most pure point guards in the state. Sawyer can go for 10 assists or 25 points, whatever you need from him. A signee of Boise State, Sawyer has a great crossover and is very solid at running the show. He and Gallegos are the reasons for the Jaguars' status as Class 5A favorites.
7. Stallon Saldivar
Judge Memorial, point guard
Saldivar simply gets it done, anyone knows that after watching the Bulldogs march to the Class 3A state title last season. Saldivar can get to the rim with ease and hit the pull-up jumper. In our opinion, he was a steal for Northern Arizona, and will be a very good player in the Big Sky Conference.
8. Scott Friel
Riverton, point guard
There are coaches who swear Friel is the best player Riverton has. He plays everything from the point to power forward, and is one of the most diverse players in Class 5A. Friel was overlooked last season after transferring from Hunter, but he's really come on this season and looks to be a strong All-State candidate.
9. Travis Parrish
Bountiful, point guard
Parrish is the best defensive guard in the state, bar none. This is a kid who has locked up a ton of scorers in his day and figures to do more of the same this season. You want to see great perimeter defense? Watch Bountiful play. Parrish is also an All-State linebacker.
10. Wade Bronson
Bear River, center/power forward
May be the best all-around player in Class 3A this season. Can get up and dunk with the best of them. Also has a solid jumper out to three-point land and leads a team that has a chance to win the Class 3A championship.
