SC ladies tame Lions

YERINGTON — Somebody pull the fire alarm on the Spring Creek girls basketball team. They’re on fire.

Actually, someone did during the Lady Spartans’ game Saturday on the road against Yerington, causing a brief delay in the fourth quarter.

The big showdown between the Lady Spartans and Yerington didn’t materialize into a nailbiter as Spring Creek won 61-43.

The Lady Spartans (16-1, 5-0) played one of their best games of the season and frustrated the defending state champions.

“It was a great game all around,” said Spring Creek coach Sarah Arendt. “The girls showed up prepared and excited. They knew how important it was . We knew it would be difficult. We came in prepared and focused. The girls’ effort showed up on the court.”

Yerington was down one of its top players — post Karri-Ann Quartz recently tore her ACL — and the Lady Lions’ two-headed monster in the paint was down to senior Kayla Lommori. Lommori scored 18 points (nine from behind the three-point line) but didn’t have much success close to the basket without her fellow 6-foot teammate.

As it has been known to do this season, Spring Creek hit Yerington from all angles. Junior Mary Suing led the team with 18 points and sophomore Stacey Kerr chipped in with 13.

As well as the Lady Spartans shot later in the game, they were a little flat in the first quarter. Down 10-5, junior Sam Rynearson came off the Spring Creek bench and scored two baskets to pull the Lady Spartans within a point at the end of the period.

Spring Creek began making shots in the second quarter and it was downhill from there.

Yerington was within four points in the third quarter, but Lommori’s foul trouble coupled with Spring Creek’s depth made the final score a runaway.

“When we went into halftime we knew we had to put two solid quarters together,” Arendt said. “We knew it was far from over. We continued to stick to the gameplan and the girls came out with just as much enthusiasm as they had when they began the game.”

Spring Creek hosts Truckee on Friday to wrap up the first half of its Northern 3A League schedule.
