Cedar's dynamic duo downs Dixie

CEDAR CITY Cedar's Joel Einfeldt worked his magic once again against another 4A Region 9 opponent, but this time he had a little bit of help from fellow guard Kai Eldredge.

The duo scored 41 points in Cedar's 53-52 overtime victory over the Dixie Flyers on Friday night.

Einfeldt scored a game-high 26 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and dished out six assists, while Eldredge added 15 points, helping the Redmen rally from a 10-point deficit.

Thirty-one of their points came in the second half with 16 in the third quarter.

"No question (the third quarter was the turning point). They owned the game," Cedar coach Craig Cardon said. "Those guys played great, no doubt about it."

It marked the second straight week that Einfeldt propelled his team to a victory, but unlike the Jan. 9 game against Pine View, Eldredge was also a factor.

Eldredge's lay-up with a little more than a minute remaining in the extra period gave the Redmen the lead for good.

"It was fun to see Kai playing well. He's a great player," Einfeldt said. "Teams are going to have to respect him and it'll open things up for the rest of the team. It's fun to see him come along."

Eldredge shared similar thoughts about Einfeldt.

"Joel is our best player. He runs the game for us, but sometimes he's going to need help," Eldredge said. "When we played together, we were so much more mentally there. We were on point. It's hard to beat people as mentally tough as we are."

While the duo was putting up the offensive numbers, the Redmen (4-8, 2-1 4A Region 9) adjusted to the Flyers' aggressive dribble drive.

Cardon made it a point of emphasis to have his team slide in and try and draw a charge.

"You have to go for it most of the time because if you don't go for it you'll never get it," Einfeldt said. "It's a chance call. So we kept trying for it."

Another adjustment Cardon and his coaching staff made was reminding his players to block out and prevent the taller post players of Dixie to get second-chance opportunities.

The Flyers (9-6, 2-2 3A Region 9) dominated the Redmen in the first half, grabbing 10 offensive rebounds that resulted in 11 points.

"That was huge. We were down six, and 11 of their points came off of offensive rebounds," Cardon said. "We encouraged the kids to battle and fight, and hold their block off longer. É Maybe we had a couple of guys who weren't being completely committed to rebounding early on, but they stepped up and did a great job."

The Flyers had two players eclipse the double-digit mark. Mike Sharp had 11 points, while Jake Mills scored a team-high 12 points.

All nine players who saw action scored at least one field goal for Dixie.

"All the kids contributed," Dixie coach Ryan Cuff said. "They did so in a hostile environment, and there are lessons to be learned in this game."

The Flyers had an opportunity to close out the game when Sharp drove hard to the basket, drew the foul and made a lay-up. He made the free throw to give Dixie a one-point advantage.

Following a timeout, Einfeldt drove to the basket and missed his layup, but Jase Bleazard got the rebound and was fouled.

Bleazard missed the first shot, but converted the second to send the game into overtime.

Cedar outscored Dixie 8-7 in the extra period.

The Redmen begin 3A Region 9 play against Canyon View on Wednesday, while Dixie opens their 4A Region 9 campaign against Pine View on Friday.
