WEST WENDOVER — The West Wendover girls basketball team picked up a split this weekend during a pair of Southern 2A league games.
The two contests were polar opposites for the Lady Wolverines, who lost Friday 63-39 to Needles but bounced back to best The Meadows 55-15 Saturday. First-year West Wendover coach John Sharp said Friday’s loss was mostly a matter of size.
“They were big,” Sharp said. “Most of their team is 5-foot-9 and above. Our team averages 5-5.”
The Lady Wolverines struggled to rebound the ball against taller foes, and Sharp said he would like to see his post players pull down a few more boards.
Danika Sharp led West Wendover with 32 points, including five bombs from beyond the arc.
On the way back home, West Wendover stopped over in Las Vegas and wrapped up its weekend with a lopsided win.
“This was a game that everyone got to play and we even suited up three JV girls,” coach Sharp said.
Danika Sharp played just 12 minutes in the game, but she still managed to score 22 points in limited playing time. During her time on the floor, the junior broke the school’s all-time scoring record for either boys or girls as she passed Jared Lewis’ mark of 1,571 points that was set last season. Lewis continues to hold the scoring record for the boys program.
Coach Sharp said the one-sided affair allowed his players to work on improving the offense and experiment with some new looks on their defense.
The Wolverines continue their season today at Jackpot and then return to league play Friday at home against Agassi Prep.
