High school athletes of the week

LESEAN WILCOX, Pleasant Grove, basketball: This senior point guard has shaken off his football rust and has the Vikings playing their best basketball of the season.

He led Pleasant Grove to a pair of wins last week and helped his team vault to No. 9 in the latest Desert News top 20 rankings.

On Wednesday, Wilcox scored 12 points as the Vikings pulled away from American Fork in the fourth quarter for a 56-44 win. He more than outdid himself two nights later.

In a battle with Lehi for second place in Region 4, Wilcox buried a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime, a game Pleasant Grove went on to win 62-57. Wilcox finished with 12 points on two 3-pointers as the Vikings improved to 10-5 overall and 3-1 in region.

TINA FAKAHAFUA, Judge Memorial, basketball: This senior forward's value can't really be measured statistically.

"She just creates so much for us offensively," said Judge head coach Jeremy Chatterton. "She opens up so much for all of our shooters."

Not that she doesn't have impressive stats. She is averaging 14.5 points and eight rebounds per game, Chatterton said. And while she's laid back, Fakahafua has evolved into a leader.

"She is just about as happy-go-lucky as you can get," Chatterton said. "But her focus this season, stepping up and doing what she needs to do is where she has really improved. She still has fun on the court and she makes it fun for everyone else."
