Warburton Breaks Free-Throw Record in Loss to TCU

March 7, 2009

FORT WORTH, TX -  Morgan Warburton broke Utah's career free-throw record as the Utes fell to TCU in the final game of the season, 53-47.

With Utah (20-9, 13-3 MWC) up 28-25 at halftime, TCU (20-9, 12-4 MWC) began the second half on an 8-2 run over the first three minutes of the half to take a 33-30 lead. The Utes called a time out, and the game was a back-and-fourth affair for most of the half.

The Horned Frogs began to take control with just over five minutes remaining. Holding a 42-41 lead, an 8-2 run gave TCU a seven-point lead, 50-43. Although the Utes would cut the lead to three in the final three minutes, the team was unable to come any closer as the clock ticked down.

The Utes had their lowest shooting percentage of the season, 28.6-percent. Warburton, Kalee Whipple and Janita Badon all played several minutes in the second half with four fouls.

Halie Sawyer led Utah and scoring with 12 points and also had her fourth double-double of the year with 10 rebounds. Whipple and Warburton each scored 10 points. Katie King pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds and added eight points.

Warburton went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line, giving her a school-record 413 career free-throws. The old record of 410 was set by Shona Thorburn from 2002-06.

Although the Utes held as much as a 13-point lead in the first half, 25-12 with seven minutes remaining, Utah struggled from the field the remainder of half allowing TCU to go on a 13-1 run through the final minute of the half, cutting the lead to one, 26-25. Helena Sverrisdottir had two three-point buckets of the drive for six points to lead TCU. Badon's bucket with four seconds left put the Utes halftime lead at 28-25. Whipple led Utah with eight points in the first half. Warburton played just 11 minutes after picking up two fouls.

Sverrisdottir led TCU with 20 points and 10 rebounds. TK Lafleur scored 15 points while Racel Rentschler pulled down 10 rebounds.

Utah, which is the No. 1 seed in the Mountain West Conference tournament despite the loss, plays its first game of the tournament on Friday, March 13, at noon.
