Tebbs signs with Snow

Lone Peak basketball player Tommy Tebbs signed an athletic letter of intent Wednesday afternoon with Snow College of the Scenic West Athletic Conference, one of the nation's premier NJCAA leagues.

A 6-foot-3 point guard, Tebbs earned All-State honorable mention and All-Valley accolades this season despite being hampered much of the year by injuries. He joined first-team All-State honoree Corbin Green (6-8, F) of Olympus as the initial members of the 2009 signing class for the Badgers.

"These are two of the top Utah kids we were looking at, and we're excited to have them," said Snow head coach Michael Ostlund. "We think Tommy has a really big upside as a college player. He has great instincts for a point guard and a really good feel for the game.

"He has the kind of personality that can rally a team and work him into a leadership role," Ostlund said.

"He's also got great floor vision. He passes in ways that you don't expect the ball to get there, but somehow it does. He's a good athlete and his lateral quickness will be very valuable on the floor."

The Badgers are losing five sophomores and four players are leaving on LDS missions, so only two members of the 2009 roster will be returning.

"We're going to be building a whole new team," Ostlund said. "We expect to sign 11 or 12 guys all together, but right now Tommy is our only point guard and was the first one we signed and we're excited to have him.

"I think he can be successful here," the coach added. "We expect him to compete for a starting spot next season."

Knight coach Quincy Lewis was very pleased at the news.

"First of all, I'm excited for Tommy," he said. "I'm really proud of the type of improveme nt he made from April last year to this March. There's no way we would have played for the state championship without him.

"Snow's getting a guy whose best basketball is still ahead of him," Lewis continued. "Most important for them is that this is a guy whose primary concern is just winning.

"The entire Lone Peak family is happy we could have one of our kids be in a quality program like Snow's," he added.

"I'm excited," Tebbs said. "This is a perfect situation for me. It was a great opportunity for me to come to Lone Peak, and now I have the chance to take the next step forward in my basketball career as I try to fulfill my dreams.

"I look forward to being part of a team in a great conference with great competition."

After coming off a couple of injuries, Tebbs averaged 6.6 points and 6.7 assists per game in eight region contests while shooting 47.2 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from long range. He also had an excellent assist-to-turnover ratio.

He was second on the team in steals with 38, including three per game during the state tournament. He also shot 50 percent from the field and averaged 4.3 rebounds as well during that final week.
