Jasmine Porter, a record-setting three-sport athlete from Layton (Utah) Christian Academy, will continue her basketball career at San Diego State.
Porter, a 6-2 1/2 small forward, announced her plans at a press conference earlier today.
"The team is just great," Porter said by phone from Layton. "Coach (Beth) Burns and the coaching staff are amazing. And (the weather) is always hot. I love that."
A gifted athlete who runs track and was recruited to play college volleyball, Porter averaged 19.3 points per game a year ago and broke the single-season state record for blocked shots (169).
Porter, though, chose to continue in basketball, following in the footsteps of her father, Bobby, and brother, B.J. Bobby Porter, the LCA boys basketball coach, played college ball at Tennessee Tech before playing professionally in Venezuela. B.J. Porter is a 6-foot-3 sophomore guard at Portland.
"(The Aztecs) play my kind of basketball," said Porter, who is interested in studying either elementary education or pediatric nursing. "They run the floor nonstop. It's a let's-see-how-many-fastbreaks-we-can-get kind of thing."
Porter was offered a basketball scholarship by a number of schools, including Oregon State, Pittsburgh, South Carolina and Villanova. She was also offered by a number of universities around the Mountain West Conference, including in-state powerhouse Utah.
NCAA rules prohibit Burns from discussing recruits until a national letter of intent is signed. The first signing day for women's basketball is Nov. 11.
