Making it official: Sharp inks with Wolf Pack hoops

West Wendover’s Danika Sharp verbally committed to play college basketball for the University of Nevada in February.

She made it official Thursday.

The standout senior signed a national letter of intent to continue her basketball career at the collegiate level as she became an official member of the Wolf Pack.

“It makes everything a lot easier now,” Sharp said of having completed the recruiting process. “It’ll make my senior year fun and not always worrying about having to impress someone. I can just go work hard and get ready for the next level.”

As a junior, Sharp averaged 29.7 points, 6.3 rebounds, 6.4 steals and 3.8 assists per game. She also became the first West Wendover athlete to earn one of the Elko Daily Free Press' All-County MVP honors handed out annually in each high school sport.

Sharp has been putting up stellar numbers since she was a freshman. She has amassed 1,881 points in her first three seasons with the Wolverines and has 451 rebounds, 367 steals and 289 assists to go along with the scoring.

A recruiting trip last winter sealed Sharp’s decision about the school. She was also looking at New Mexico and Utah.

“I liked everyone out there, especially the coaches,” she said. “The campus is great. I wanted to go somewhere with a family environment and they really took me in.”

As for her first three seasons at West Wendover, Sharp said she has enjoyed being able to improve her skills. She has also had the opportunity to play under the tutelage of her dad — head coach John Sharp. She noted her defense and shooting abilities have improved the most during her first three years.

She gets a few more months of prep ball to refine those skills before being thrown into her first collegiate practice.

During her conversations with coaches at Nevada, Sharp said she expects to play the two-guard for the Wolf Pack and while she is not sure how much playing time she will get as a freshman, she does expect to play some.

“I’ll be working out and trying to get in the best shape,” Sharp said of her plans between now and leaving for Reno. “I need to increase my speed to be prepared for the next level.”
