Hepworth hits milestone as Sugar-Salem wins; Dec. 16 girls basketball roundup

At Sugar-City, Sugar-Salem senior Sofia Hepworth topped the 1,000 point milestone as No. 1-ranked Sugar-Salem girls basketball team trounced Salmon 61-23 on Wednesday.

Hepworth, who was called up to varsity during December of her freshman year, scored 21 points in 18 minutes to reach the career mark. Hepworth also had five steals and three assists.

Sugar-Salem held Salmon to three points in the first quarter and two in the fourth to improve to 8-1 on the season and 1-0 in the Mountain Rivers Conference.

Jocelyn Ostermiller scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds for Sugar-Salem, which forced 34 Salmon turnovers.

Salmon tried to slow down the up-tempo Sugar-Salem offense by stalling, but Sugar-Salem’s trap forced the issue.

“We started trapping, trying to get the game moving,” Sugar-Salem coach Todd Jensen said. “I was pleased how we handled the first half and still put up 42 points.”

Jensen said Hepworth is the first 1,000 point scorer he’s coached in his six years as a head coach.

“Since she was called up about this time of year when she was a freshman, she really made 1,000 points within 3 years,” Jensen said. “That’s pretty remarkable. The team was pretty excited about it. It’s something that doesn’t’ happen very often.”
