Soaring Eagle enjoying rebirth

At the start of the season, the Juan Diego girls' basketball team had a modest goal: Win more games than last year. With only three wins last season, that hasn't been hard to accomplish. Currently at 7-1, Juan Diego has bounced back, thanks largely to two transfers from Bingham.

"Our team is so much better this year partly because of our two transfers but also because these girls finally believe in themselves and have developed the confidence it takes to win," coach Ashlee McKray said.

Kulia Wilson and Camille Tua had both done very well at Bingham in the last few years and their presence on the team has definitely improved the over all level of play. Wilson is the heart of the team and brought in a new way to defend the basket and taught her teammates that defense is the point of the game and with out it, they can't win," McKray said.

Wilson is well balanced with Tua, who leads the team with assists and steals. Lauren Tigue is another Soaring Eagle who is making a name for herself. Tigue is averaging double digits in each game and a fierce defender. McKray said she wants to be the best and goes for it no matter what.

"We are still working on how to deal with last minute situations and close games," McKray said. "But with each game, the girls confidence and ability to play together shines through."

Tigue is only a junior, but has started to show what she can do on the court. She has averaged double points at nearly every game so far this season and has been a big part of the Soaring Eagles winning season so far.
