Logan » Tyler Newbold didn't know that he'd secured the first double-double of his career. All he knew was that he had "grabbed a lot of rebounds."
But that's Newbold for you, a 6-foot-4 junior shooting guard at Utah State. He's never going to wow you with his statistics.
He's never going to be demonstrative on the court and he's never going to remind you of a "me first" kind of ball player.
What he will do is run through a wall for his team. He'll set picks, defend the best perimeter player the opposition has and knock down the open jumper with regularity.
"You love to coach a guy like Tyler Newbold because his motor's always running," Aggies coach Stew Morrill said. "He's never going to stop, and he's never going to stop doing the little things. There are guys that have bad nights shooting the ball and they go into the tank. They don't do anything else. That's not Tyler. He's always going to bring something to the table, and that's what I love about him."
In a 78-42 win over Western Oregon, Newbold scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. He knocked down a trio of three-pointers, and had six offensive rebounds, which gave the Aggies six extra possessions.
And that's a testament to the player Tyler Newbold has been this season. He hasn't had the best year shooting the ball, but he's gotten much better of late.
He's always had one of the best assists to turnover ratio's on the team and he's seemed to figure out the area which he's needed and found a way to contribute.
"I've always felt that I need to rebound the ball more," Newbold said.
"So getting a double-double has always been a goal of mine. I think that my rebounding helps the team a lot. So hopefully, I can continue to do it."
