Syracuse remains unbeaten

SYRACUSE— It is not about being undefeated.

But by beating Bingham 54-41 in a non-league game Wednesday, the Titans remained one of the state’s seven unbeaten girls basketball teams.

“The undefeated season is not very important,” Syracuse senior small forward Jen Hazlett said. “We don’t even talk about it. The only things that matter are region and state.”

Sophomore Brittney Martin recorded a double-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds and six steals for the Titans (11-0 overall), who shot just 37.0 percent (23-of-62).
Hazlett had 11 points, nine boards, a block and three assists. Hailee Parry put in a season-high 11 points for Syracuse, which had 15 steals  and only 11 turnovers.

“We played really well; we had a lot of intensity,” the 18-year-old Hazlett said. “Yesterday we had a tough, emotional game (at Clearfield), but we were ready today.

“Coach (Rob Reisbeck) didn’t want to run up the score. He respects (Bingham) coach (Rand) Rasmussen,” Hazlett said. “Bingham is a good team and we needed some competition. Every single girl who stepped on the court came out with their best game.”

Dezz Ramos and Nicole Newbold each scored 11 for the Miners (8-3), who shot 41.9 percent (13-of-31).

“Today’s game was pretty good; the coaches were happy,” Hazlett said. “Our defense was solid today. We condition a lot so we can press.”
