Logan»There are few things quite as enjoyable as going for 20 points and 10 rebounds in a college basketball game.
And even more enjoyable for Nate Bendall -- make that relieving -- is that the junior center from Utah State broke out of what was a prolonged slump.
The 6-foot-9 Bendall dominated San Jose State in Saturday night's 77-58 win for the Aggies in Logan. He threw down just his second dunk of season. He rebounded, he hit mid-range jumpers and he scored at will in the low post.
Then he found time to joke about it in the postgame media session.
"I hope someone took video of that dunk and posted it on YouTube," Bendall said. "You aren't going to see me throw down too many of those."
For Bendall, the game was significant because he hadn't played well since missing 10 days because of minor heart surgery earlier in the season. In coming back, Bendall had looked slow, hesitant, and clearly wasn't the same player who started the year so strong.
"It took a lot of adjusting," Bendall said. "It's been hard getting my timing back. I didn't feel like anything was wrong with me physically. It was just something was missing. The big men in this league are very good, and it took awhile to get me adjusted to that as well. It was a little frustrating at times."
On Saturday, Bendall outdeuled Chris Oakes, one of the Western Athletic Conference's best big men. Oakes, who's had some big games against Utah State in the past, was held to six points and seven rebounds, mostly with Bendall guarding him.
And when he had the ball, he went right at Oakes and anyone else who was guarding him.
