Too Sharp to Handle: Wolverines’ Sharp sets state record

WEST WENDOVER —  For the last few months, West Wendover standout basketball player Danika Sharp has been chasing one player.

Now, everyone is chasing her.

The University of Nevada-bound senior broke the Nevada high school state scoring record set by Durango High’s Lindy LaRocque from 2005-08. LaRocque’s mark of 2,678 points fell early in the fourth quarter of West Wendover’s 66-42 win against visiting Agassi Prep.

Sharp went baseline and dropped in a layup to break the mark. She finished the game with 36 points and has 2,704 for her career.

“I was excited that everyone was there and proud of me. I was glad I could do it on my home court,” Sharp said. “It was good to do. It was a high goal for me. I knew I was capable, but I knew I’d have to work for it. I worked hard to get it.”

Sharp, who only played the second and fourth quarters Friday against an overmatched Agassi squad, has at least two more games to add to her mark. West Wendover wraps up its regular season today against Calvary Chapel and has earned a spot in the Southern 2A Regional Tournament next week.

She hopes to add to the mark and set the new mark high.

As for Friday’s game, West Wendover coach John Sharp held his starters out in the first quarter and Agassi Prep jumped out to a 12-8 lead. The Wolverines’ starters came into the game in the second quarter and outscored Agassi 17-9.

The game was played close in the third but Sharp came back into the game in the fourth. She scored 26 in the final eight minutes to not only snap the record but also led her team to a big win.

Candy Roland and Sadie Burner each chipped in six points for West Wendover.

Coach Sharp, who is also Danika’s father, suggested the record as a goal for his daughter at the beginning of the season, but he did not think she’d be able to catch LaRocque’s mark.

“We knew she’d have to average 30 points per game because we have like three or four less games this year than we had last year. Plus everyone had seen her for three years and defenses would focus on her.”

The defenses did focus on Sharp with frequent double and triple teams but Sharp would not be stopped. Coach Sharp said his daughter plays the game with a lot of heart.

With all the defensive pressure focused on her, the Wolverines ran a lot of perimeter screens for Sharp to get a look at the basket.

It worked.

Sharp said she scrimmaged a lot with the boys basketball team to prepare for the season and get used to the defenses she would see this season.

After she broke the record, the game was briefly halted to announce the mark. Sharp was presented with a game ball to mark the occasion.

Today’s game against Calvary Chapel tips at 3 p.m.
